Roadmap

Vision

To produce reliable and sustainable cloud computing infrastructure in Baltic states and Belarus. The main accent is on acquiring and sharing cloud computing know-how using open-source solutions.

BalticCloud is aiming at targeting at IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) and PaaS (Platform as a Service) solutions. In the following text they are sometimes jointly referenced as cloud computing.

Duration of the project

04.2009 - 04.2010. The afterlife of BC will be decided afterwards. Possibly remaining as an information exchange club.

Milestones and Tasks

M1. Initial evaluation of the basic building blocks is done, toolkits are chosen. IaaS is deployed in each institution separately. Basic crash-course on IaaS usage is established and executed in at least one of partner institutes.

  • M1.1 Evaluation of Eucalyptus, OpenNebula and other cloud enabling software packs. Documentation in wiki.
  • M1.2 Deployment of Eucalyptus in each partner university. Access is based on registration.
  • M1.3 Development and execution of the first crash-course on cloud computing.

M2. Resources are presented in a coherent way to the user (e.g. as multiple availability zones). Basic monitoring and accounting are in place. PaaS solutions are evaluated. Crash-course is additionally enhanced with modules on using PaaS. Evaluate usage of IaaS for supporting multiple grid middlewares.

  • M2.0 Stabilize Eucalyptus-based installations in all countries.
  • M2.1 Investigate a way to connect security infrastructure of BG to BC. Evaluate possibilities of creating separate VO.
  • M2.2 Investigate grid middleware support possibilities.
  • M2.3 Enhance crash-course.

M3. BC has a working infrastructure of both IaaS and PaaS as well as their documented usage. Models for collaboration with external partners (e.g. industry or other projects) are discussed and at least preliminary agreement exists. Crash-course is given in at least 4 places (both academical and industry). It contains modular structure and can be oriented towards both industry and academic partners and can stress on both technological and business aspects.

M4. BalticCloud is providing IaaS and PaaS solutions to both academia and industry. Crash-course is a reusable learning object aimed at teaching students and industry about cloud usage both from technological and business sides. Support infrastructure for BC integrates with BG support infrastructure. BC knowledge database (wiki-based) includes solutions and best practices for various aspects of cloud computing: installation, administration and usage.
